Goodness me, he does indeed appear as AZE in the lists, from the same meet in Minsk where the Georgians appear, too. What was going on there?

who else considers the qualification system for the world championships a scandal? i consider it much better then the previous one.
I partially agree, in that I consider it somewhat better than the previous one. It has some advantages: a) It is part of a popular event that is considered a real event in the places where it has been arranged (only in Norway so far). (Obviously it does not have this advantage over the European Championship.) b) All continents have equal chances of qualifying, there being no quotas carried over from last season. c) There is more than one way to qualify, so that if you miss one, you can catch up with another. d) The procedure is interesting for nerds like me. e) There are other competitions going on at the same time, to give non-nerds a chance for being entertained, too. f) It is new and therefore exciting. And then there are some disadvantages. i) Participants from other continents have a long way to travel, but this is alleviated by the event being part of the World Cup, which they will travel to anyway. ii) The procedure is complicated. iii) People who are qualified already have no interest in participating. iv) It is part of a regular World Cup event, which will take attention away from the qualifying event and will make it difficult for some nations to enter sufficient numbers of candidates due to the distance quotas. v) Only two of the allround distances are involved, removing at least one of the chances to skate a 10000 m during the season (at least for the men). vi) It is new and therefore a breach of tradition.

To me the advantages outweigh the disadvantages somewhat.

Bosker had the best results in the junior World Cup as far as I can see. Please nominate another candidate if you have one. The same applies to the Czech team, it’s only my suggestion. But I think the way they perform against all odds, progressing as a team, is impressive.

to me the explanation of the choices is more interesting then the choices themselves :)

to me disadvantage v is not quite relevant since it doesnt remove a 10 k from the previuos calendar :)

i would also say that it's good that only the middle distances of the allround combination are skated in the qualification competition. if the full program was skated, then it would kinda be a championship before the championship.

to me the real scandal about the actual qualification system is that some countries don't try to qualify he maximum skaters by making some of them skate the 2 distances required, focusing on the single distances world cup .

Canada had only 2 male sprinters skating the required 2 races to qualify for the world sprint championships. and also we qualified 3 ladies and 2 men for the allround championships but sent only one of each gender, apparently for budget reasons :(

for the best junior I would gladly nominate fellow canadian Ben Donnelly or korean Min-Seok Kik,for being close second as a B2 junior. I do not personnaly follow junior world cups but i would pick the world junior champion over the junior world cup best skater :) especially when all the juniors dont skate the junior world cups.

No not from last year’s calendar, because the same system was in force then. But before that we had the qualifier events with full allround programmes.

Not exactly. Only the championship is the championship. Is the European Championship a championship before the championship? Were the New Year’s Races back when we had them? Big combinations are demanding, of course. The demand a lot of restitution and disrupt the World Cup programme. But the World Cup schedule is so thinned out these days, there is room for another big combination or two.

Well, they will lose out if they don’t focus on the single distances World Cup. You have to make a choice as long as it’s a combined event. That’s the biggest problem with it.

Ok, I’ll second your nomination of Donnelly. After all he’s the official Junior World Champion allround. Even if it’s only over 500-1000-1500-5000. He did beat Bosker comprehensively in the 5000.

i get it, yes there were a few more pairs of 10k when there were the north american and asian qualifiers. also im not sure if they cut the 10k from the european championship already, but its a shame for sure.

i would like to have combinations in the world cup, but as long as there is none, i think the current qualification format is good :)

yes, they should actually add more quota places. they dont add enough with the current setup.

Ok, I’ll second your nomination of Donnelly. After all he’s the official Junior World Champion allround. Even if it’s only over 500-1000-1500-5000. He did beat Bosker comprehensively in the 5000.
correct, but the champion is the champion :) also i dont think the outcome would have been different had the 1k been replaced by the 3k

The scandal is that a competition for specialists is used for a non-specialist (allround) competition.
On the 1500m both Kjeld Nuis and Thomas Krol had good chances to a podium ranking in the general classification.

This leaves room for three allrounders.
This problem could have been solved by allowing one more entry or holding a second 1500m (just like they did with the 1000m).
One way they encourage specialist, and on the other way they want allrounders to start in a specialist competition.
It is just like the 10 competitors rule in the Olympics.
If KNSB had decided to allow Jorrit or Sven to skate a 10k than there would have been difficulties with Thomas Krol who had a fair claim.

to me the explanation of the choices is more interesting then the choices themselves :)

to me disadvantage v is not quite relevant since it doesnt remove a 10 k from the previuos calendar :)

i would also say that it's good that only the middle distances of the allround combination are skated in the qualification competition. if the full program was skated, then it would kinda be a championship before the championship.

to me the real scandal about the actual qualification system is that some countries don't try to qualify he maximum skaters by making some of them skate the 2 distances required, focusing on the single distances world cup .

I do not personnaly follow junior world cups but i would pick the world junior champion over the junior world cup best skater :) especially when all the juniors dont skate the junior world cups.

who else considers the qualification system for the world championships a scandal? i consider it much better then the previous one.
Post by ***@yahoo.com [Speed_skating]
also what are the stories behind marcel bosker, stephanie beckert and the czech team as the best team??
Bosker had the best results in the junior World Cup as far as I can see. Please nominate another candidate if you have one. The same applies to the Czech team, it’s only my suggestion. But I think the way they perform against all odds, progressing as a team, is impressive.

Hm, what does your ranking system think she has done to top Ihle’s bronze medal? I’m not sure if I will second this, but maybe someone else will.

Seconded. And I don’t know what I meant by nominating Seung-Hoon Lee. I must have looked at last year’s results. Though he did win the gold in Kolomna. I think I’ll withdraw him.

Pechstein is ranked 19 (1500), 10 (3000) and 3 (5000) at the end of this season. This means she is no. 11 in the total rankings.

http://www.skoyteranking.net/45500110

N. Ihle is ranked 39 (500) and 22 (1000). He is no. 43 in the total rankings, where also his strong Wch result is included.

http://www.skoyteranking.net/45500116

So Ihle's Seoul results is strong, but I guess Pechstein was better if you look at the entire season.

Murashov is on top of the 500 m ranking, and he won the World cup as well as the WSD title (if you don't count PK)

I do too, so that means every nomination (also in parentheses) has been seconded.
I cannot accept wholesale seconding. If you think any of the unseconded nominations are really relevant to the poll, please mention them by name. Including irrelevant candidates to the poll will tempt someone, for example fans of that particular skater, to waste their votes instead of participating in the poll to elect the real best skater in that category.

I also support that every nomination between brackets should be
seconded. Do you define the rules
for the KOLN skatelist or do we? This is Cinquanta behaviour.
If it is a majorite vote it is 3 against one.
There never have been fangroups here that massivley voted for irrelevant
candidates. If it happens we can
talk about it.

BTW this email list is virtually dead after 21 years of excistence

Keessie

I’m taking pains to organise this poll, so I define the rules. But maybe we should just forget about the whole thing. I have plenty more to do.

Even if the irrelevant candidates don’t get many votes, the votes cast for them are wasted and ought to be cast on the relevant candidates. Often the differences are small and wasted votes can tip the balance. Maybe we should have a discussion about the unseconded candidates. There could possible be good reasons for including some of them if not all.
