Bergen, January 24, 2016

What is happening to Canada. They send very few skaters to the important World Cup in Berlin this week-end.
According to
http://static.isu.org/media/458824/final-entries-isu-world-cup-berlin-january-27-29-2017.pdf
they will send only 3 men and 1 woman.
They had a lot more skaters in the World Cups before Christmas 2016. And neither of those World Cup were qualifying for the World Championship Allround and World Championship Sprint like this World Cup is.
Are Canada satisfied With the quota they get as host nation for the sprint championship that will take place in Calgary. And why will they not try to send more than one allrounder to the World Championship at Hamar.
Skaters like Weidemann and Tutt could be able to qualify Canada for more skaters, not just Blondin, And I also think Canada have more skaters than Bloemen that should be able to qualify for Hamar. And Bloemen should already be qualified for Hamar based on the 2016 results in Berlin...
So, what is happening to Canada? Why does not more skaters from Canada participate in the Berlin World Cup?

Hi. Yes, That was strange. But there are some mistakes on the list. An Liu is listed 5 times. Also surprising no Bowe and Manganello. So USA and also Korea is not interested to participate in Hamar I understand. Well, Lehman might be able to quality. I have by the way seen That Bowe will skate in Korea, but not in w.ch. in Calgary!! BjÞrn Hagen.

hi,

very sad but lack of money.
the focus in on the single distance champ as funding is linked to that.

there should be 2 men and 1 lady at the sprint champ un calgary.
i doubt there will be a team in the allround champ :(

even for the world cup final, no team, except for those who can pay their way

I think it is not worth the trip, no Chinese, hardly any USA skaters, no Koreans, and with the WCh Sprint and all round coming up, all that travelling on this moment in time is disastrous. I think most of them have an intensive training scheduled at the moment, with a rest period after this. Berlin was just wrongly timed on the calendar.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Very sad indeed.

And a bit confusing that Canada keeps hosting those international allround and sprint championships, when they are not (?) interested in competing in the same events... There are no national championships either, I gather.

Anyway, as you mention, the funding is linked to single distances in many countries, which is a big shame. Speed skating should promote its advantages, not work against it. Many sports have single distances, not many have the allround champions.

Regards, B. Haarberg.
