You are hereby invited to the 20th(?) Ortygia World Championship Prediction Championship.

To participate, predict the distance winners and the winning times, the top 8 overall and the next 4 that you predict would have qualified for the final distance if they had been allowed. This is not the same as the 9th to 12th overall, because the current overall reckoning includes the 500 m and not the final distance.

Please submit your predictions before the first pair starts on Saturday. You may modify them as much as you like before that.

Here is one example:

Takagi 38,69
WÃŒst 1.54,66
WÃŒst 4.01,31
Sáblíková 6.53,86

1. WÃŒst
2. Sáblíková
3. de Jong
4. Takagi
5. Blondin
6. Joling
7. Graf
8. Curus
9. Njåtun
10. Jurakova
11. Oshigiri
12. Kraus

Blokhuijsen 36,03
Michael 1.45,57
Kramer 6.10,44
Kramer 12.55,15

1. Kramer
2. Michael
3. Pedersen
4. Blokhuijsen
5. Roest
6. Giovannini
7. Swings
8. Beckert
9. Tumolero
10. Henriksen
11. Contin
12. Donnelly

Good luck!

BTW, here are some statistics books that could be useful if you are following the championship or want to try predicting them or for your general entertainment: http://www.ortygia.no/Skoyter/AOS/AOSfront.shtml

Hello Lars aren’t there two Takagi’s participating.
Yes there are. I revised my prediction. I will assume Miho if anyone else haven’t specified.

Good to hear from you again. But where’s Tim now? Less than 3 hours left.

The female 500 m had one clear favourite, who did not disappoint. She skated her 500 m in Heiden style and provided 3 points for all who had the wisdom to predict her. Her time was even better than expected and only Francis had a ‘good prediction' of the time (within 0.5 %), so he wins the distance with 8 more who had ‘fair’ predictions (within 1.5 %) share the silver.

Only Carool, Tim, Kees and Marcel were quick enough to catch the last-minute inclusion of Juskov, and with a good (only 7/100 from excellent) time prediction, Tim wins the 1500 m in 5 points while the other 3 had 4. Sybe and the other top contenders all missed him though, and Sybe still keeps his lead.

The ones of those women who didn’t qualify for the 5000 m but would have qualified if the limit had been 12 are, in the order of their 1500 + 3000 m samalogs: 9. Marije Joling 80,364, 10. Four participants predicted the female 5000 m winning time excellently, and win the distance at 6 points: Francis, Jos, Arild and Tim, who takes over the lead outright. Is it for keeps? A bunch of others scored 5 points and a few others 4. The winner of course was very easy to predict.

JÞrgen predicted the men’s positions 1 to 8 best, scoring 24 points with the right winner (of course) and bronze medallist and nailing Swings, Giovannini and Beckert correctly as well as scoring a couple of points with Pedersen and Roest. Too bad for him that he was the only one to gamble with a Martina win in the other gender, proving a costly gamble. Second best were Nils, me and Jos with 23, then followed Arild, BjÞrn, Carool, Gerrit and Tim with 21. And guess who runs away with the trophy once again:

Tara – tara – tara – tara – taraaa – – –

GOLD. Tim Wolfkamp, NED 81 (2-2-4-6-8-8-2-1-1-1-1)

Thus we in the organising committee (me and my catly owner Julius) once again request a winning speech, hoping that you’re not too tired of writing them yet. Along with perhaps some more tips for our predictive training schedule heading for 2018.

The silver was a three-way Norwegian tie (after all winning silvers behind Dutchmen has been a popular pastime here lately):

Silver. Knut Egil Gundersen, NOR 79 (2-2-1-2-2-2-2-4-5-1-2)
Silver. Lars Finsen, NOR 79 (2-2-4-4-5-8-11-13-14-6-5)

Thanks to you all and every one for a memorable if not great season and if you don’t find yourself at or near the top of any of these list there’s no reason to weep overlong, just enjoy the spring and summer, keep honing your predictor skills and if the great nations keep their peace we shall perhaps meet again when the snow falls on them (or most of them) and the ice crackles under their feet for the next Olympic winter. Good luck!

The best predictor of the female positions 1 to 8 was Kees, who scored 26 with the top 4 and Jurakova right as well as Graf well placed. I was second with 25, then came Marcel and Knut Egil with 24. This means that Knut Egil joins Tim in the overall lead before the last distance.

4 contestants share the top spot in the 10000 m as well, scoring 5 points with a good time prediction (and the correct winner like everyone else of course): JÞrgen, Gerrit, Nils and Tim. A bunch of people scored 4 and a few 3. So Tim takes the lead for himself again, and the race hots up for the final reckoning, which will be published tomorrow.
