Are there more recent standings?
Unfortunately I was lying on a table with some busy folks around me when the 10000 m took place. It was a wonderful event which I’d like to watch some time. I came back home again today and I’m feeling very good indeed. Sun in the house for the first time, snowdrops around the walls, a pretty new moon setting in the sea west of my house, and Lorentzen! Here are the standings after day 7. I will come back with the others when I’ve dealt with some backlog of work.

Harm and Arne Johan are the only ones besides Øyvind who has the right winner, and they both even have the right silver medallist. Harm has the better time prediction, so he wins the gold here, while Arne Johan takes the silver. Brynjar and Jos, who both predicted one of the medallists correctly and the other in the wrong position, share the bronze.

GOLD.Harm van den Belt.NED 15
Silver.Arne Johan Isaksen.NOR 14
bronze.Brynjar Haarberg.NOR 10
bronze.Jos Kloppenborg.NED 10
5.Carool van Kesteren.NED 9
BjÞrn Hagen.NOR 9
Øyvind Erstad.NOR 9
Sybe van Hijum.NED 9
9.Bert Steghuis.NED 8
Nils Meland.NOR 8
11.Lars Finsen.NOR 7
Brigt BÞ.NOR 7
Ivar Hansen.NOR 7
Dick Pluim.NED 7
15.Tim Wolfkamp.NED 6
16.Knut Egil Gundersen.NOR 4

Brynjar keeps his lead and Tim’s slip means that it’s a little more secure:

1.Brynjar Haarberg.NOR 72 (as before)
2.Jos Kloppenborg.NED 67 (as before)
Arne Johan Isaksen.NOR 67 (up from 3rd)
4.Tim Wolfkamp.NED 61 (as before)
5.BjÞrn Hagen.NOR 60 (as before)
Sybe van Hijum.NED 60 (as before)
7.Carool van Kesteren.NED 57 (up from 7th)
8.Harm van den Belt. NED 56 (up from 13th)
9.Brigt BÞ.NOR 55 (down from 7th)
Dick Pluim.NED 55 (down from 7th)

12.Bert Steghuis.NED 51 (down from 10th)
13.Lars Finsen.NOR 49 (down from 12th)
Nils Meland.NOR 49 (down from 12th)
15.Knut Egil Gundersen.NOR 45 (down from 12th)
16.Ivar Hansen.NOR 37 (as before)

Medal table:

Brynjar Haarberg 3-1-1
Jos Kloppenborg 2-1-1
Tim Wolfkamp 2-1-0
Brigt BÞ 2-0-0
Arne Johan Isaksen 1-2-0
Harm van den Belt 1-1-0
Sybe van Hijum 1-0-1
Øyvind Erstad 1-0-0
Nils Meland 1-0-0
me 0-1-0
Bert Steghuis 0-1-0
Carool van Kesteren 0-0-1

Good luck with the further competitions!

The last one was day 8, not day 7, which I proclaimed mistakenly in the not yet published header.

Nils Meland has been a shadow of his former self this far in the competitions, but this time he joined Tim in predicting both the right winner and a medal for Cha (though not the right one). A good time prediction puts them in a tie for gold. Of the other 14, surprisingly only 5 had predicted the World Cup leader to win. Of these, Knut Egil was the only one who made an excellent time prediction, so he wins the bronze. Sybe van Hijum gets 1 bonus point for predicting the correct time, the only correct time prediction so far these games. Surely guys, we can do better than this?

GOLD.Nils Meland.NOR 13
GOLD.Tim Wolfkamp.NED 13
bronze.Knut Egil Gundersen.NOR 11
4.Lars Finsen.NOR 10
Brigt BÞ.NOR 10
Harm van den Belt.NED 10
7.Dick Pluim.NED 9
8.Sybe van Hijum.NED 7
9.Carool van Kesteren.NED 6
Øyvind Erstad.NOR 6
11.Brynjar Haarberg.NOR 5
Jos Kloppenborg.NED 5
Arne Johan Isaksen.NOR 5
14.BjÞrn Hagen.NOR 4
15.Bert Steghuis.NED 2
16.Ivar Hansen.NOR 1

With a prediction evidently calculated less carefully than his others, Brynjar loses his lead to Tim, the Kramer of predicting. Myself I’m climbing for the second 500 m in a row. Maybe I have become a sprinter?

1.Tim Wolfkamp.NED 105 (up from 2nd)
2.Brynjar Haarberg.NOR 101 (down from 1st)
3.Jos Kloppenborg.NED 95 (as before)
Brigt BÞ.NOR 95 (up from 5th)
5.Arne Johan Isaksen.NOR 91 (down from 4th)
6.Sybe van Hijum.NED 90 (up from 7th)
Harm van den Belt. NED 90 (up from 8th)
8.BjÞrn Hagen.NOR 88 (down from 6th)
9.Dick Pluim.NED 84 (up from 12th)
Lars Finsen.NOR 84 (up from 13th)
11.Carool van Kesteren.NED 83 (down from 10th)
Øyvind Erstad.NOR 83 (down from 10th)
Nils Meland.NOR 83 (up from 14th)
14.Bert Steghuis.NED 81 (down from 9th)
Knut Egil Gundersen.NOR 81 (up from 15th)
16.Ivar Hansen.NOR 56 (as before)

Medal table:

Brynjar Haarberg 3-2-1
Tim Wolfkamp 4-1-0
Brigt BÞ 2-2-0
Jos Kloppenborg 2-1-1
Nils Meland 2-0-0
Arne Johan Isaksen 1-2-0
Harm van den Belt 1-1-0
me 1-1-0
Sybe van Hijum 1-0-1
Øyvind Erstad 1-0-0
Bert Steghuis 0-2-1
Knut Egil Gundersen 0-1-1

Tim made up for his 10k blooper by having the right winner as the only one, and he also had the right silver medallist, winning the female 5000 m gold pretty convincingly. Brigt had one correct and one incorrect medal position and a good time prediction, winning silver, and Brynjar, Bert, BjÞrn and Knut Egil share the bronze with various combinations.

We were in full agreement that Japan would win the female team pursuit, and since almost all of us also agreed that the Dutch would take the silver, not much difference was made up in this event. Brynjar, Knut Egil and Sybe had excellent time predictions and share the gold.

Three participants had the podium entirely correct in the female 500 m. I had an excellent time prediction and win the distance, while Brigt had a good prediction, winning silver, and Bert had a fair prediction, winning the bronze. All the others had the first 2 correct, so there wasn’t so much ground to gain here.

Unless Brynjar does something spectacular in the 1000 m, the race is over for him, because he hasn’t predicted the mass starts. But anyhow, good luck to everyone on Friday, skaters as well as predictors.

The overall leader Tim pulled the trick of predicting both the silver and bronze medallists correctly in the female mass start, and thus wins the event. Jos and Arne Johan both correctly picked Kim for the silver and shares the prediction event silver.

GOLD.Tim Wolfkamp.NED 10
Silver.Jos Kloppenborg.NED 5
Silver.Arne Johan Isaksen.NOR 5
4.Carool van Kesteren.NED 3
Lars Finsen.NOR 3
Brigt Bø.NOR 3
Øyvind Erstad.NOR 3
Harm van den Belt.NED 3
Nils Meland.NOR 3
Knut Egil Gundersen.NOR 3
Sybe van Hijum.NED 3
12.Brynjar Haarberg.NOR 0
Bert Steghuis.NED 0
Bjørn Hagen.NOR 0
Ivar Hansen.NOR 0
Dick Pluim.NED 0

This means that Tim is already the winner of the 2018 Ortygia Olympic Prediction Championship as he’s 19 points ahead of the next one who does have a prediction in an event where the maximum score is 18 points. Congratulations! You can write the winner’s speech when you have watched the men’s event.

Bjørn and Øyvind predicted the correct winner and another medal winner correctly, though different ones, so they share the win in the men’s mass start event, the last of the Games and this game. Jos and Dick had the winner and another medal winner mentioned, though not in the correct place, thus they share the bronze. Carool was the only one who mentioned all the medal winners, but they were all in the wrong place.

Hi all,

I will start thanking Lars as usual, for his organization, his efforts and very enthusiastic build up of the results!

Too bad for our Norwegian friends, the titles remain in Holland, at lest for this year, although Pedersen,
in the Olympics 1500m and even more in the Worlds, remains the real guy to fill pity about.
But the good thing is that for the coming years the Dutch have to fight hard for titles.

I was working abroad, otherwise I would for sure have been in Amsterdam,
but luckily I still got almost full coverage.

The races were incredible and full of surprises.
If anyone would have guessed Kramer not be on the podium and van der Poel winning the 10k,
he would have surely been sent directly into the asylum!
That van der Poel would reach the last eight I guessed somehow already after the 500. His 10k finish with the Semernikov ws a great battle.
Too bad NOS missed the winning race, but good that later we could watch the race anyway.
Somehow we all expected more from Nilsen. He made the 500m podium earlier and improved on the longer distance this year.
Ireen did a incredible 3k, but even with 'normal' 500m it would have been extremely difficult to have beaten Takagi
During the weekend, I also hoped for Lollo to be on the podium!, but seeing Anouk made it in her final race was a fine alternative.
I did not reckon with the victory in the worlds, but my predicted times were most of the time pretty ok.

I am not sure yet if I will announce my retirement, but for now enjoy the summer and see you probably all next year!

Kind regards

Tim

Well, six of us had the two first places on the podium right. And I had the pleasure of predicting the correct winning time and with one bonus point I win the gold here where Lorentzen did not. Bjørn, Brigt and Nils had good time predictions as well and share the silver.

GOLD.Lars Finsen.NOR 17
Silver.Bjørn Hagen.NOR 15
Silver.Brigt Bø.NOR 15
Silver.Nils Meland.NOR 15
5.Tim Wolfkamp.NED 14
Knut Egil Gundersen.NOR 14
7.Brynjar Haarberg.NOR 13
Carool van Kesteren.NED 13
Dick Pluim.NED 13
10.Jos Kloppenborg.NED 12
Harm van den Belt.NED 12
12.Bert Steghuis.NED 10
13.Øyvind Erstad.NOR 8
14.Arne Johan Isaksen.NOR 7
Sybe van Hijum.NED 7
16.Ivar Hansen.NOR 1

Tim has a solid lead and since Brynjar in 2nd place hasn’t predicted the mass starts, and since the mass starts are hard to predict and thus will yield few points, Tim is almost ready for yet another win.

1.Tim Wolfkamp.NED 145 (as before)
2.Brynjar Haarberg.NOR 138 (as before)
3.Jos Kloppenborg.NED 131 (as before)
Brigt Bø.NOR 131 (up from 4th)
5.Lars Finsen.NOR 128 (up from 8th)
6.Bjørn Hagen.NOR 126 (up from 8th)
7.Harm van den Belt. NED 124 (as before)
Knut Egil Gundersen.NOR 124 (up from 10th)
9.Arne Johan Isaksen.NOR 122 (down from 5th)
10.Nils Meland.NOR 121 (up from 12th)
11.Sybe van Hijum.NED 120 (down from 6th)
12.Dick Pluim.NED 119 (as before)
13.Øyvind Erstad.NOR 116 (down from 11th)
Carool van Kesteren.NED 116 (up from 14th)
15.Bert Steghuis.NED 111 (as before)
16.Ivar Hansen.NOR 75 (as before)

Tim has blundered a little with his MS predictions, predicting Lee for the men, but then Blondin and N. Takagi, who are not men. For the women he has predicted Lollobrigida-Kim-Schouten. Jos has predicted Lee-Verweij-Pedersen and Lollobrigida-Kim-Blondin, which doesn’t look significantly better, I think. Brigt has predicted Lee-Kramer-Michael and Schouten-Kim-Bergsma. I have predicted Lee-Mantia-Silovs and Kim-Lollobrigida-Rigas. Bjørn has predicted Lee-Mantia-Verweij and Blondin-Lollobrigida-Bettrone. Let’s see who has the smartest guesses here, but I think Tim is pretty safe despite his blunder.

Medal table:

Brynjar Haarberg 4-2-1
Tim Wolfkamp 4-1-0
me 3-1-0
Brigt Bø 2-3-0
Arne Johan Isaksen 2-2-0
Jos Kloppenborg 2-1-1
Knut Egil Gundersen 2-1-1
Sybe van Hijum 2-0-1
Nils Meland 2-1-0
Harm van den Belt 1-1-0
Øyvind Erstad 1-0-0
Bert Steghuis 0-2-1
Bjørn Hagen 0-2-0
Carool van Kesteren 0-0-1

Good luck on Sunday!
